Frequently Asked Questions and more detailed information about the Guitar Retreat:
  • Why a Guitar Retreat?

    Open or Close
I have been holding workshops for many years now. Teaching one on one or in group, the most memorable and rewarding was my 8 year stint at the Blues Week programme through the European Blues Association in UK. I taught slide beginner classes within acoustic blues and that was tremendous fun. I’ve learned just as much as my students I guess.

But the Retreat? Isn’t a retreat something spiritual..?
If a traditional workshop is a process of teaching by showing and then practicing until it’s perfected, a retreat is more than that, I believe. Come and relax as well, enjoy the nature, take the time only for yourself, besides getting a best possible workshop...

  • Retreat - what are we going to do?

    Open or Close
During the retreat we live, play and eat together for three days. Please understand that none of the scheduled content is obligatory, it's all up to you if you wish to participate or not. You will always be able to catch up later on, and much of the material and songs we’re working on will be available on video afterwards.

The main subject is going to be acoustic guitar playing within many styles, touching the techiques, tunings and all other aspects of playing. I will however not cover classical guitar, just to make it clear...

At the same time, I do hope that an accomplished classical player can only gain from a gathering like this, so do feel welcome if you’re one of them.

The retreat will contain individual and group teaching, gatherings, jams, guitar talks, we’ll be discussing the life wisdom and simply enjoy each other’s company.

There will be time for practicing or just relaxing, reflection, recovering, it’s all up to you.

I have limited the number of participants to max 15 per group just to be able to provide a highest possible quality of this gathering.
But I do offer several dates and I'll be happy to accommodate everybody interested.

    Welcome!
  • Who is the Retreat for?

    Open or Close
Guitar players of all levels (even beginners with only the basic chord knowledge)
Guitar players within various music styles
Musicians with another main instrument but playing the guitar as well
Music lovers interested in all aspects of an acoustic guitar

You don't need to be able to read music or guitar tablature, lot of teaching is done by making video recordings of the tuition both prior to, during and after the retreat. The latter is a special bonus.
  • What Are You Getting?

    Open or Close
    • 12 one hour slots of varied content whereas 6 hours are traditional workshop worth ca €450
    • You will learn new licks, new songs, you’ll be trying new playing techniques and improving the ones you already have, we’ll be working with open tunings etc.
    • NEW STUFF! “Student’s Request Song” is my invention folks, you send me a song you'd like to learn prior to the retreat and I’ll do my best to prepare a lesson and maybe even a video you can take with you. Please understand that by a "song" we usually mean vocals and guitar part of either known songs, traditional music (blues, country, early jazz...) or whatever you think is interesting. Please let me make clear that if you're interested in learning a complex instrumental of some kind - then I would kindly recommend taking my workshop called "Mac Attack" separated from the Retreat. This because complex instrumentals crave time for preparation and setting up the teaching procedure. I'm not sure it would be possible to learn how to play a complex arrangement during the Retreat, considering that we have a very varied content we'll be going through. Another little "reservation" I'd like to make is.. please don't ask me to show you how some of my peers are playing their arrangements or their own songs. By this I mean my fellow musicians who are playing similar style to what I'm doing, who are from the same part of the world.. I think you get it. I believe it would be fair enough to contact them directly and ask for a lesson or a tab/video that they might be able to provide.
    • I will pass my knowledge of doing a professional guitar setup regarding the guitar physics, choice of strings and the string action for your best playing comfort. I’ll also advise you how to take care of your precious instrument.
    • We’ll be talking acoustic guitar pickups of all kinds, I’ll be demonstrating various products - from under-saddle and magnetic pickups and microphones to several hybrid systems, I’ll be talking about and showing PA systems and amps for acoustic guitars as well as many useful accessories.
    • I will talk about playing live, choosing the right song for the occasion and audience, dynamics of playing and many other aspects of being out there in the spotlight
    • You get to spend some quality time with yourself or with other participants, get some insight about your playing
    • Detach from the outside world for a couple of days, the Island of Ven is a fantastic place...
    • Please don't forget that you, as a participant, can initiate new content at the spot and we'll find the time to address it as well.
